This week, we completed the work on a full driveway transformation on the outskirts of Lincoln, creating a smart and practical gravel driveway finished with a Sorrento block paved border and apron.
The aim was to create a driveway that not only looked great but was properly constructed from the ground up, providing a strong, stable and long-lasting finish.
As with any quality driveway installation, preparation was key.
Before work began, we carried out a utility scan and completed the necessary site set-up. We then stripped and removed the existing vegetation from the left-hand side of the driveway, disposing of the waste responsibly off site using the grab from KSL Aggregates & Recycling
The existing driveway surface was excavated as required, with all excavated material removed from site. This provided a suitable base for the construction of a substantial new driveway foundation.
Once excavation was complete, we installed a geotextile membrane across the prepared area. This helps separate the driveway construction from the ground beneath and provides a stable base for the subsequent layers.
An initial layer of clean limestone was then supplied, laid and thoroughly compacted using heavy plant.
Taking the time to correctly prepare and compact the sub-base is an essential part of creating a driveway capable of coping with regular vehicle traffic for years to come.
To give the new driveway a defined and attractive finish, we installed a block paved apron using Sorrento block pavers, together with a matching Sorrento block paved border around the footprint of the proposed driveway.
The block paving was installed on a C4 concrete mix to provide a strong and secure edge to the gravel driveway.
We also constructed new block paved pathways leading to the back gate and the front of the garage, helping to tie the different areas of the property together while providing clean and convenient access.
Good drainage is another important consideration when constructing a new driveway.
As part of the project, we installed a French drain to help manage surface water and direct it away from the driveway area.
With the drainage in place, a secondary layer of clean limestone was introduced and again thoroughly compacted using heavy plant, creating a solid and even surface ready for the decorative gravel.
For the final surface, we supplied and evenly distributed decorative pink Leicester/pink granite gravel across the driveway.
The pink tones of the gravel work particularly well alongside the Sorrento block paving, creating an attractive contrast and giving the finished driveway plenty of character.
Kiln-dried sand was swept into the joints of the block paved areas before the paving was compacted to complete the installation.
Once all works were finished, the site was cleared and left clean and tidy.
The completed driveway combines the traditional appearance of decorative gravel with the clean lines and definition of block paving.
More importantly, beneath the finished surface is a carefully constructed driveway incorporating a geotextile membrane, multiple compacted limestone layers and dedicated drainage.
From excavation and ground preparation through to drainage, block paving and the final gravel finish, the team completed every stage of the project to create a smart, practical and durable new entrance to the property.
